Jdo:Iran defiant over boycott of Israeli
Iran says its athletes should boycott any contest against Israelis, confirming that
its judo world champion refused a bout at the Athens Olympics on political grounds.
The comments by a government spokesman have set Iran on a collision course with Olympic
officials who could punish Iran for letting politics intrude on its sporting ideals.
ARASH MIRESMAEILI failed to fight Israeli EHUD VAKS after turning up overweight for
Sunday's 66 kg bout.
MIRESMAEILI was quoted as saying he refused to fight out of solidarity with the Palestinian
people and an Iranian Olympic official says MIRESMAEILI had been ordered not to take part.
International Judo Federation officials are due to meet today to consider taking action
against Iran.
