FED: Australia s population hit 19 million

SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - Australia's population has reached 19 million, but the nation's annual
growth rate remains among the lowest in the world.
Figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) also show it will take
another six years before the nation's population hits 20 million.
"Today, Australia has just passed a population of 19 million," the Minister for Financial
Services and Regulation, Joe Hockey, said today.
"The 19 millionth person is likely to be a little girl born in an Australian hospital."
Mr Hockey said his prediction was based on current figures which show that more females
than males are born in Australia.
