Fed: Labor says govt afraid to lift Qantas foreign owner limit

The federal opposition says the HOWARD government is afraid to tackle the issue ofwhether foreigners should be allowed to buy more of Qantas.

Cabinet is expected to decide next week whether to accept a push by the national airlineto lift its foreign ownership limit from 49 per cent.

But the cap looks set to stay, with opposition to raising the cap within governmentranks becoming more public.

Labor's transport spokesman MARTIN FERGUSON says the government is more concerned withpolitics than with policy, but Labor has an open mind on whether the limit should be relaxed.
